Curfew in Assam’s Sonitpur district after clash between Bajrang Dal and the locals Over bhumi pujan bike rally.

Sonitpur DM in his order to enforce section 144 of the CRPF under the limits of Thelamara and Dhekiajuli police station.

Indefinite curfew imposed from 10:00 PM at Thelamara and Dhekiajuli police station area in Sonitpur district following the clash which occurred on Wednesday earlier in the day.

 At least 14 people were injured and several vehicles were damaged when the two groups clash in Assam Sonitpur district the incident took place when a bike rally was organised by the bajrang dal to celebrate the ram temple bhumi pujan. Initial clashes were reported from Thelamara and Dhekiajuli town in Sonitpur district.

Eyewitness said that a large number of bikes of bajrang dal member we’re headed to the Shiva temple at Bhora Singori area under the Thelamara police station. The bajrang dal chanting slogans of Lord ram, when the group arrived at Thelamara, few locals from the muslim dominated village objected, leading to heated argument that turned violent after. Both the groups attacked each other and the local set a few bikes on fire. 

Police were forced to discharge several rounds in the air to bring the situation under control. Additional troops were also deployed. Injured are being treated at nearby hospital.
